Education for Children and Youth

In early 2016, SWAMI Western Australia Inc was guided to establish a joint-venture project with Minnawarra House in the city of Armadale, Perth, which offers family support to the local community. As a result of that connection the weekly ‘Self-Confidence and Life-Skills’ program for children and youth was started.

This program was aimed at building confidence and introducing the five human values (Truth, Right-action, Peace, Love and Non-violence) to 10-15 children and youth every Sunday. The two (2) hour session included free values-based activities for children aged between 3 and 15 years and serving wholesome meals thereafter. It also included games and group activities including arts and craft, story-telling, discussion and videos relating to the five human values. The children were taught not to differentiate between people of different nationalities, ethnicity, faiths and abilities but to develop a more compassionate heart that considers everyone as part of one family.

We observed many changes and improvement in the lives of these children from when we first started interacting with them. Those who were shy and who found it difficult to communicate, developed confidence and began to communicate better with our volunteers. Others who were uncooperative, softened and became more considerate. The children looked forward to coming to the next session for bonding and sharing love, an experience that volunteers and attendees cherished together. This program ceased after the COVID-19 pandemic.

Due to the positive response to the Self-Confidence and Life Skills program from the participating parents and a significant improvement in the children’s behaviour, together with the knowledge and experience gained through this project, and the reputation within the local community, our organisation is planning to expand the program into a free, values-based school from Pre-Kindergarten to Year 6, to meet the educational needs of the Armadale community.

The Advanced Determination Application was lodged with the Department of Education in November 2021 and on 9 May 2022, our committee received a letter from Sue Ellery MLC, Minister for Education and Training, who made an advanced determination in our favour. Committees are currently working in the areas of Curriculum, Facilities and Buildings, Finances and Governance to provide information to the Director-General of Education for his approval to establish a school. This is the final stage of a course set out in 2014 by Sri Sathya Sai Baba, through His disciple Sadguru Sri Madhusudan Sai, to establish a free, values-based school in Perth, Australia.

The school, named Sunshine Academy, will open in 2025 with pre-Kindergarten, Kindergarten and Pre-Primary classes. The school management committee is currently looking for suitable land in the Armadale area on which to construct the school.
